The FLAMES®
Runtime Suite is a set of fully-functional, ready-to-use applications
(executable programs) that allow you to create, execute, and visualize
FLAMES scenarios. The moment the Runtime Suite is installed on your computer,
you are equipped to simulate many different types of systems in support
of a wide variety of simulation requirements -- without paying any licensing
fees. Using the FLAMES
Development Suite, you can modify or expand the capabilities of the
Runtime Suite to satisfy almost any modeling and simulation requirement.
The Runtime Suite includes:
FORGE - FORGE™ is an integrated, easy-to-use, graphical application that can create, execute, and visualize FLAMES scenarios
FIRE - FIRE™ is a non-graphical application that can execute FLAMES scenarios in batch mode
FLASH - In playback mode, FLASH can visualize a completed scenario using a playback file that was created by FORGE or FIRE. In the optional monitor mode, FLASH™ can visualize and control a scenario that is being executed by FORGE or FIRE
Bundled Component
Plug-ins - Multiple component
plug-ins that contain ready-to-use
models of many types of real-world systems, such as air, land, sea,
and space-based vehicles,
sensors, weapons, human behavior,
and much more
Demonstration Scenarios - Multiple, fully-constructed scenarios that illustrate just a few of the types of scenarios that can be created with the Runtime Suite
Tutorial Scenarios - Simple scenarios that you can build yourself by following the included, step-by-step instructions
Example Scenario Database - Loads of example data that is used by the demonstration and tutorial scenarios and can be used to build your first scenarios
Overview and Tutorial Videos - Short videos that introduce you to FLAMES and illustrate how to build a simple scenario
FLAMES Documentation Set - The entire set of all 30+ FLAMES manuals, including the manuals for the Development Suite, in both online and printable formats
Automated Setup and
Activation tools - Tools that install FLAMES on your computer and
activate the Runtime Suite applications via the Internet

The Runtime Suite is loaded with advanced features that will help make you extremely productive in your modeling and simulation activities. The following is a list of some of the most useful built-in features.
Framework Architecture - The framework architecture of FLAMES easily supports almost any modeling and simulation requirement imaginable
Component Support - FLAMES supports components (models) of any type of system in any physical domain (land, sea, air, and space) at nearly any level of fidelity and resolution. FLAMES also supports human behavior modeling
Plug-in Loader - Runtime Suite applications automatically load and integrate the designated component plug-ins resident on your computer, including the bundled component plug-ins as well as any custom plug-ins developed with the FLAMES Development Suite
Large Scenarios - The size of scenarios is limited only by the capacity of your computer. With support for 64-bit computers and multiple-core computers (optional), scenarios can be very large
Terrain Modeling - Scenarios can include terrain databases constructed from digital terrain elevation data
Teams - Specify the relationships between players in a scenario with teams
Scenario Visualization - Visualize scenario activity with animated, 2D graphical displays and optional high-resolution 3D displays
Scenario Database - The scenario database stores and manages FLAMES scenario data and allows scenario data to be shared among multiple users and multiple scenarios
In addition to the built-in features listed above, the Runtime Suite also supports several optional FLAMES products. A given option is automatically enabled in a Runtime Suite application if a license to the option is embedded in all of the component plug-ins loaded by the application.
3D Option Bundle - Use detailed, high-fidelity terrain databases, with features (such as roads, lakes, and buildings) and satellite imagery, in your scenarios, and visualize your scenarios in high-resolution 3D
Multithreaded Execution Option - Multithreading executes a scenario using two or more of the processors of a multiple-processor (or multi-core) computer
Analysis Option Bundle - Perform complex parametric trade studies and Monte-Carlo analysis
Interactive Simulation Option - Allows interactive scenario execution with virtual simulators and real-world command, control, and communications systems
HLA Option - Supports communicating with other simulations using the High Level Architecture (HLA)
DIS Option - Supports communicating with other simulations using the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol
Checkpoint/Restart Option - Checkpoint/Restart saves all internal data values in checkpoint files at specified times during scenario execution and allows scenario execution to restart using the data in a checkpoint file
Licenses to the Runtime Suite are free, and you can install the Runtime Suite on as many computers as you want at no cost. Request a free Runtime Suite CD by mail. Custom component plug-ins developed using the FLAMES Development Suite can also be installed on any computer without a licensing fee.
